Komodo Edit (the free version of Komodo) is a fine piece of software, and
even
Komodo IDE for £150 is cheap compared with comparable commercial software,
and
it includes an invaluable regex debugger.

In addition, Microsoft have done us all a favour by paying for a
third-party
type designer to create a comfortable programmer's font. It's based on
OpenType,
which is Microsoft's intelligent font anti-aliasing, but it's downloadable
for
nothing and I think should work on anything that can display Truetype.
