Well, that is a question of aspects.

I started using pcs some 16 years ago, that was with a AT 286/12,
running DOS as os. This was the machine I did some programming with
TurboPascal on.

With this pc I also started using the internet. That was the time
before the www became popular. With dos as os and xpoint as the news
and mail application I made contact to the world, marvellous.

I did some programming with Pascal and also batch programming.

In 1998 we bought a new pc, my PII/266. At that time it had 64 mb ram
and a 6 gb hdd which I later upgraded to 288 MB and (in steps) to 120
gb hdd space. This is the machine I still have in use.

Later on we bought a PIII laptop for my wife and a PIII/933 desktop
for our elder son David (now 16) which now is used by Elijah (12).
David later on achieved his AMD64/2400. All these pcs are run under
Linux. I set up a lan for all these pcs (fast ethernet) with a P/200
as router and firewall under IPCop (very fine Linux firewall
distribution).

About 2000 I started with Linux as os, during the first time in a dual
use mode. In 2006 I deleted the last win98 partition of my pc. With
the pii I did no programming. Mostly because lack of time. Well, not
really nothing. I did some html and some javascript - but no pascal.
Our pascal related books laid in the book shelf.

In 2006 I did a little bit of programing with Java, but that wasn't
the real thing. Mostly because the programs seemed to be a bit slow on
my pc, even the most simple programs.

Then our elder son told me that he will start informatics at school
next term. And the teacher informed the parents that (together with
other stuff) he will make use of Pascal as programming language
because it is optimized for studying - which I think is correct.

I had learned of the freepascal software earlier, but now I installed
it on my pc. And got my pascal books in order to start again with that
programming language. ;-)

So I regard myself a some kind of experienced user when it comes to
office software and communications but still a beginner regarding
programming.

I decided to start again with the beginning, because it has been a
long time since I did the last real programming.

Yes, I have programmed "hello world" again - it works ;-)

Greetings from Arft,

Dirk Weber
