I know very little about playing multimedia files on PCs, so the following
is probably wrong, but FWIW (and it's worth very little, I'm sure):
There are two, um, "flavors" of software for playing multimedia on
Windows: the older Video for Windows and the newer DirectShow (actually, I
think DirectShow has now been subsumed into DirectX, instead of just being
a part of it). So, codecs come in two flavors: VFW somethings and DS
filters. I suspect TMediaPlayer may be using the older VFW, whereas I'm
sure (well, pretty sure) Windows Media Player, at least recent versions of
it, use DirectShow/DirectX. It would then seem likely that you only have a
DivX DS filter, not a DivX VFW codec (although I thought DivX installed
both the last time I installed it). Or perhaps only the DivX DS filter
sup****ts MPEG2.
All just guess-work on my part, but maybe the words I've parroted here
will lead you in discovering the truth of the matter. Good luck!
