- no device driver woes (screen, printer...)
- easy memory management (>640KB)

Yes, this is how I see it. Console applications can run on almost every
OS, that's probably why the FPC IDE is such a beast. But as a user I
feel no need to use or sup****t multiple platforms at the same time,
instead I want WYSIWYG editors, browsers and text processors, multiple
independent windows, drag and drop files...

Nonetheless applications deserve a practical framework, which nowadays
is a event driven GUI. Console applications are okay for the very first
steps, and for adventure-like games, but not when it comes to the
implementation of real life programs or games with graphics.
