Jamie, I had  tried that one but no joy, but at least I was thinking
along the same lines
Robert, I had previously tried Descending from TCustomForm but though
it a dead end when it didn't work first time, however after reading
your post I tried it again and it was a case of using

inherited CreateNew(Owner);

in the constructor

The Grid now works and so do the existing standard Controls. I'm not
sure why it was losing it's window handle previously but hopefully I
can build from here. I've learned a lot about Delphi and Object
oriented programming in the last week.
