Arpeggiating is easy (just switch the speaker to a new tone every so
often).  Emulating the state machine is harder, and much harder if you
need it to work on platforms a different speed than your own.  The
basic idea is to use 2 or more registers with a period value and count
them all down; when one reaches zero, pulse the speaker.
