This newsgroup has been "the" place for general MUMPS questions,
discussions
and news for a very long time. Having yet another place to subscribe,
maintain and monitor doesn't really help. The signal is low because most
MUMPS activity is now in Cache and therefore, most of the "signal" is on
intersystems.public.cache.
If there is a way to officially shut down this list and move to a "member
managed" list, then at least we would not be thinning things out.
Otherwise, creating a new list just exacerbates the situation. It appears
that the new Yahoo group has been set up so that everyone can read it,
that's good because it allows one to monitor without having to subscribe.
In affect, those who subscribe to that group are voting to pull the plug
on
this one. Does anyone know if that can be done? Is there some ultimate
"owner" who can make that happen? (It appears the MTA was instrumental in
starting this group, but the MTA is defunct.) (Based on a little browsing
on Wikipedia, it appears that comp* groups are approved and can be removed
by the "Big-8 Management Board".)
There is MUMPS-L on the UGA listserv, and if you think things are quiet
here, it's a graveyard over there; but at least it's a non-commercial
list.
In 1995 comp.std.mumps was shut down because this list was clearly where
the
traffic was and the MDC felt it was best to merge that group into this
group.
Occasionally over the years there has been some "noise" from one nut or
another trying to reach the whole world by spamming all newsgroups. It's
annoying, but I still want to be tuned-in to the MUMPS community and this
is
one of the channels I will monitor as long as it remains open. If we can
shut this one down and start one with controlled access, then I would move
for one that does not include commercial advertising.
