I don't think you need do-cm3-base.sh at all, and the build (locally) then
****p sequence is definitely false (on scripts level). `build' or
`buildlocal'
build a set of packages with overrides (relative to the ROOT variable).
The packages cannot (and must not) be ****pped if built with overrides.
What you usually want to do is

  ./do-cm3-std.sh buildlocal
  sudo ./do-cm3-std.sh build****p

The second step not only ****ps the packages (which would contain
references
to your workspace), but also builds them before that with correct
references
to packages in the global pool (/usr/local/cm3/pkg).

Probably the installation notes are not as clear about the semantics of
build, ****p, and build****p as they should.

Please remove the ROOT setting from your cm3.cfg and redo the installation
as suggested. This may also cure the other problems you re****ted, but
we'll look at them in time.
