I don't think it is actually less safe, but I am not sure I can prove it
right now. I will try to find the paper.

Note that the SYM file keystamp is also included in the OBJ file when it
is
created. If the linker is set up to cross check these keyfiles, I think
that
any final inconsistency will be caught then. It can probably be shown that
if there is any inconsistency in any of the SYM files involved in the
compiles,
then you will have some inconsistency in the OBJ files keystamps.

In practice, the compiler will find the inconsistency at compile time,
since
it
cross checks all the keystamps found in a SYM file, not just the file's
itself.
