Also, try compiling a .DEF file on its own and look for the output.

But .SYM files are *not* plaintext. They are a machine-readable binary 
representation of the plaintext .DEF file with some additional signature /

timestamp type of information to ensure consistency of im****ts across 
multiple modules. See my reply to JP2R for more detail.
