If that's supposed to be Postscript, you got the parameter order of
def and the name of mul wrong.  Also, defining x and y globally is
nasty.  You can use a local dictionary, but in this example using the
stack is shorter:

/sq {dup mul} def
/hyp {sq exch sq add sqrt} def

Moreover, in Postscript I would pass the vector as an array, resulting
in the following definitions:

/sq {dup mul} def
/hyp {0 exch {sq add} forall sqrt} def

You can call this as follows:

[3 4] hyp =

And you can also use it to compute the length of diagonals of cuboids
and other hyperrectangles:

[3 4 5] hyp =
