I'd also throw in another plug for DSL (damn small linux).  Runs fine on 
a 32MB pentium.  Comes complete with GUI and office suite.  Desktop 
looks a lot like the os-that-must-not=be-named.  With 256MB, you should 
also have no problem with Ubuntu.
