thanks for sending the images. What you've done is actually one of
the
methods for making smooth curves by cutting out each vertex.
In 3D graphics this approach is often called "subdivision" and is used
to smooth surfaces.

PS. Starting from a rectangle, a subdivision can produce a variety of
ellipse-like curves. It can produce curves which are something between
rectangle and ellipse (you have to change 0.428...)
