Which, as Sabine pointed out, were not inserted by NetBeans.  They had to
have 
been inserted by the user.

One assumes that the word "plain" in "plain text" was key to Sabine's
point. 
While it is undeniable that the char 147 and 148 are text, they are not 
"plain".  They also are not legal String constant delimiters in Java.

Not that I agree with the advice to stick with "plain" text, BTW, or find
it 
relevant to the OP's problem.  However, it is im****tant to stick to legal
Java 
when programming in Java, and this is the heart of the OP's difficulty.
