There is little logical about English.  I spent a lot of time with
foreign students when I was at university. They would always be saying
strange things.  I would query.  They would explain the logic. I would
then have to ponder what the unwritten rules of English were that
forbade such a construction, and explain them to the student. English
is far more complicated and irregular than nearly every native speaker
recognises.

I eventually began to wonder if it was just constructed of pat phrases
with very little true structure.
