The big one is cost. 

The other would be the ability to pump through many transactions per
second even with relatively limited RAM.  As RAM gets cheaper,
databases don't need to be as clever to get decent performance.

Even the most flat-footed database should behave well if RAM is big
enough to float the entire database into it.
