Thanks for responding (and in a rather quiet group too!).

I've since fixed the problem - it turns out it was an artifact of our
internally-developed framework which we use to manage naming services
- a sort of crude UDDI, if you will.

I won't bore you with the details, as it's not at all on-topic, but
the windows box is now ticking over every half second just as it
should.

Thanks once more for your suggestions - it's always good to get a
fresh perspective when you've got a real head-banger of a problem...
