Ultra low wages and the future of Computing

by Roedy Green <see_website@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Jun 21, 2008 at 11:09 PM

I wrote a little program that submits PAD files to about 20 websites
for distribution. The list is limited because most websites do things
to defeat automation like demanding you set up accounts with
passwords, key validation code CAPTCHAS, answer questions ...

You can see it at http://mindprod.com/applet/submitter.html

I discovered a company offering to submit my pads to 2000 websites for
$50. I was puzzled. How could they possibly crack all those defences.
I wrote and asked what sort of technology they used. The answer was
NONE. They do it all manually. The company is in Nepal and $50 split
between company and worker for a week's mind-numbing work is a good
deal.

I saw a do***entary about the rise of the computer industry in India.
They have added 200,000 new jobs recently. They are immensely
profitable raking in billions.

The funny thing is, these third world countries are succeeding because
there is no automation in the computer science field. It is a case of
the shoemaker has no shoes. Programmers are almost as traditional and
resistant to automation as violin makers.

Think about the automation of furniture making. There is no doubt a
cabinet maker produces higher quality furniture, but except for a
luxury specialty market, almost nobody can afford it.

Crass as it sounds, I think North Americans and Europeans should start
thinking about ways to crank out code at least 10 times faster.

One of my suggestions is the SCID. See

The biggie will be "style sheets" for GUIs that have roughly the same
function as CSS style sheets have for CSS. By removing GUI details
from application code, that alone should give un an order of
magnitude. GUIs were a terrible step back in coding productivity.
