Microsoft's folly

by Roedy Green <see_website@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Feb 10, 2008 at 11:33 AM

Microsoft wants to duplicate Google's success on the web, with its
lucrative advertising revenue. The idiots decided to solve the
problem by buying an incompetent search engine, Yahoo, for $40
billion.

If they want to succeed, all they need do is build a better mousetrap.
That is how Google succeeded.

If they want to win, here is what they have to do:

1. break or licence the Google patent on the wheel, namely ranking
sites by how many links there are to them.

2. Focus on finding images, an area where Google is hopeless. Allow
search by combination of extension, transparent background, photo,
illustration, icon. Have people searching help label images with what
they are. You have to figure out whom you can trust by comparing
labelings from other people so you can undo somebody's labelings who
is screwing your around.

3. Allow more user interaction. Users let you know how good various
hits were. Again you have to be able to compare so you can get rid of
people try to fiddle the system, or use them for finding stuff for
other like them.

4. You use the browser through client side software. It re****ts
broken links back for confirmation and retest. It re****ts what people
spend most time looking at.

But I don't think they will. They are too stupid, too Republican. They
think only in terms of money, not how to serve the public.
