Printer manufactures are planning to use encryption to ensure only
their ink cartridges will work in their printers.

The printer manufacturer will have a perfectly captive market. The
manufacturer can raise prices over time and the users have no escape
other than junking their printers. The manufacturer can even obsolete
a perfectly good printer by refusing to manufacture the ink for it.

The one advantage to consumers is pirates won't be able manufacture
low-quality ink and pass it off as premium brand.
