That is bizarre!

The only idea I've been able to come up with is to see if I can 
duplicate the problem using the HDF C libraries, rather than working 
through IDL. If so, then it's an HDF issue, and I'll check with the HDF 
help desk. If not, it's an issue with the IDL wrappers for the HDF 
functions, and I'll have to talk to IITVS.
