Actually I'd be quite unsurprised.
Graphics drivers contain a *lot* of code, and there is a surprisingly
large number of features that look similar but don't share much code.
It's entirely possible, for example, that 3D works perfectly but some
exotic 2D function will make the driver damage its data structures. If
OpenOffice happens to call just such a function, you'll see OO crash
your system but everything else will seem fine.

Since I have run OO in various versions on different systems, I can
testify that it usually doesn't do that.
