If your compiler sup****ts ISO_C_BINDING from Fortran 2003, you
could map the POSIX fstat call, although you might need to write
a small C wrapper to deal with the macros involved. This might even
be ****table to Windows, since to my knowledge POSIX is also sup****ted
there.
