Although the "Linux way" is to use ncurses (not that ncurses is
simple or lightweight; but core utilities use ncurses, which means
that whatever ncurses does is properly configured; otherwise, the
system would be unbearable), there is a simpler and more immediate
solution which is: use screen.

screen is a terminal emulator; it runs within a terminal (any kind of
terminal which has the proper terminfo capabilities) and emulates VT100
terminals in which applications can be run and use VT100 escape
sequences. screen can run several terminals as "tabs" and has a handful
of cool features, including keyboard-based copy&paste and the ability to
"detach" (i.e. you can logout without shutting down your applications,
and then recover them after logging again on the machine).
