Hmm... I used to think that the OS would map each new process into a
virtual space of its own so every program could start at the same
address...

Any good ideas where to get a firm grasp of what's going on?

There's a lot of material out there, but if you know of any one
resource that may help me out the most (both for linux ELF's and mach-
o's I'm interested in) - that would be great. Simple, a good starter's
guide that sort of thing ie, dummies guide to linking said binaries.

've had some spare time so I've tidied up the messy patching a bit.
I've got an asm here which conditionally assembles on my leopard. I
expect it should also work on linux and BSD, in fact, given my
understanding BSD uses ELF, it should work the same as the linux one.
Just set the right flag and go... Note the source is currently flagged
to build to osx so just
find the %define target.

Oh, in addition to conditional assembly of the appropriate LINOS,
LINOS5's - I've added to your dictionary a very generic unix/stack-
based (ie not linux type)  syscall word XOS where

XOS ( n1 n2 n3 ... nx  x  function-call  -- return )  / x = no of
parameters - needs this
                                                      / to know how to
clean up stack after.

Take a look and see if you think you like this version - I reckon it
should give you a 'bina' (BSD ciforth or close to one anyway, if
you've solved linking on BSD ELF's).

Regarding syscalls: I haven't quite found an OSX '_newselect' although
a remap to the old select seems to work find on my OSX. I'm also not
quite so sure yet what ioperm and iopl do, but that'll come in time.

It runs pretty good on my mac now that most of the syscalls are right,
bar those ones above I think. Memory map's still somewhat screwed
because of prior mentioned reasons. If and when I get a chance I'll
use the same file and try it on a real FreeBSD, and see what I get.
