Second that. I once wrote a comparison routine in C, I though
would be really critical. (It wasn't). I gave the compiler some
room to manoeuvre, like having it all in one subroutine.
I carefully inspected the code that came out, but couldn't find
a single improvement opportunity.

But it did do some things, like optimising jumps to jumps,
that I wouldn't dared to do myself, in fear of loosing track.
