I read a long time ago that IBM was withdrawing, but I haven't verified
it.

I read that Sun moved to EFI for their x86 production, meaning for most
of their new sales. I haven't seen anything about Motorola.
I would be pleased to find out OF isn't dying. A quick job search turned
up one San Jose company that wants OF experience along with expert C and
assembly and a lot of other qualifications.
