I would call it 3 PICK and there would be no ambiguity, no wasted
dictionary 
space, and no help files to update.

That is not the same: 3PICK instead of 3 PICK is a useless 'optimization',
while 3DUP ( a b c -- a b c a b c ) instead of 2 PICK 2 PICK 2 PICK and 
3DROP instead of DROP DROP DROP are less cluttering, easier to type, and 
saying much more clearly what the intention of the code is.
