I'm sure we're all in agreement that well-written code is
preferable to badly written code.

What compilers and optimisers do is to bridge the gap between
source and binary. For Machine Forth or colorForth on
conventional CPUs, an optimiser will provide a significant
improvement in performance - even for well-written code.

For a SEAforth chip, the relation****p between source and
binary is more that of a macro-assembler, and I wouldn't
presume to say that an optimiser could do better.
