You're the second independent researcher that arrived at this result in 
Windows (at least XP) :-D

A friend of mine is trying to do the same in a Windows machine (he lives 
some kilometers from my place), and got the same overall result.

Running under a Linux debugger I managed to unravel the mystery a little 
bit:

The (GTK+) application built with EiffelStudio makes use of png files to 
show icons, and it needs to be started from the directory where these 
files are.

I'm still RTFM'ing, but couldn't find anything on this yet...
