I was surprised when I used TextWrangler on the Mac to discover all
the different formats it recognized - including Mac, Windows, Unix
(Mac uses Unix) with different line-end/form-feed combinations.
Someone here will tell what Unix files expect.

I've worked on various mainframes and almost all of them handle record
length with the OS.   A fixed 80 column record is 80 columns.  Period.
It is interesting that this is from a time when space cost more, but
it gave up space in the name of speed.
