This is what many people do:

1. Look for a comparable perm job in the same city. 
    No luck.
2. Look any job in the region.
    Find contracting job 300-500 miles from home.
3. Live in hotel, say you'll come home every weekend.
    Do that for one month. Find the drive too punishing.
4. Live in hotel, go home once a month.
5. Ask wife to drive half way.
6. Realize new job has more frustration and aggravation.
    Contractors are expendable. 
7. Look for ANY job in home city.

Some still think there are jobs for life, if only they can resist change.

I knew an IBM branch manager who, after the branch was closed, continued
wearing the IBM
uniform and carrying an attache case with IBM marketing literature .. to a
part time job
paying 1/10 as much. He kept talking mainframe, even though he was working
in a Unix shop.
I'd say he was shell shocked.
