The person who told me about the drop-out rate in games programming also
said that they actually have three streams in their course. There is a
graphic design part, which is mostly artistic, then there is games design,
which is about integrating the bits together. The stream with the high
dropout rate, graphics programming, is about building the fancy effects,
handling the physics, the AI, making sure you get the frames updated in
the time available, etc. Only this last stream really needs a lot of
low-level technical skills.
