Adding values to a database

I'm a newer application programmer (Java, C++, etc), and have begun
learning Clipper.  I have a friend who runs a game system based on the
language, and it has several databases that are updated by parsing
data through files.

Can anyone point me to code examples and/or tutorials on the language,
or recommend books?  What I am trying to do is have a manual batch
program that adds a value to a user selected database/table.
