I've resolved various Clipper-calling-external-apps using start.exe. 
Does calling Acrobat via start.exe resolve the issue?

Another solution may be to use Sumatra PDF if your goal is simply to 
display the PDF file.  It is a small, open source, single file PDF 
viewer (approx. 1Mb).

It also supports printing via the command line.   I don't think Acrobat 
Reader does this.
