vo2.5b3 shuts down immediately after launch

I've used vo2.5b3 without difficulty for years.  All of a sudden I
cannot launch the IDE -- it shuts down without an error msg a moment
after displaying the repository tree.  Neither an external reindex,
swapping the installed version with a saved old version, nor
reinstalling the entire VO application change this at all.  Does
anybody have any ideas?
