The amount of memory allocated for 'a' is exactly 'sizeof a', i.e. the
size
of the pointer. However, I guess you mean the size of the memory that 'a'
points to, but for that there is no way to get at it.

Suggestion:

   std::vector<int> b(100);
   std::vector<int>* a = &b;
   std::cout << "number of elements: " << a->size()
      << std::endl;
   std::cout << "size of memory: " << (a->size() * sizeof (int))
      << std::endl;

Instead, and usually much better, you should use a reference though.
