i bet your biggest issues with speed
  would come from unnecessary copies in expressions

e.g.
  bigNum1 * bigNum2 + bigNum3 * bigNum4
has three (count 'em!) temp bigNums

asm doesn't clean that up
but expression templates do

and i bet if you built in expression templates
  and moved your code to headers
  and profiled
you might be surprised at the difference with blind optimisation
