Yes, I agree.  

Although I would probably have an "OPTION EXPLICIT" enabled by
default, and complain bitterly about each undimmed variable, and then
default to the native integer type.

Worse than that.  :-)  Unfortunately, some parts of MSs kluge require
passing a Variant.  COM or some such.
