The Onomastics of BASIC compilers

by Gary <LanceGary@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Nov 14, 2007 at 02:48 PM

But there seem to be quite a lots of BASICs around. See, for example:

http://basic.mindteq.com/WinList.asp

I found myself intrigued by the names given to these versions of
BASIC. Some are clearly named after their manufacturers, or sponsors
or Platforms: BBC, CASIO, TI, MS, Win, etc. But the other names
offerred are less obvious. Some seem to emphasize a link to C, or
sometimes PASCAL:

AsemBasix
B++
BasPas

There is an emphasis on activity and speed and force in many of teh
neames, e.g.,

ACTIVE basic
AutoIt
BLITZ basic
FORCE basic
POWER basic
QUICK basic
Quicker Basic
Quickforward BASIC
Rapidbatch
RapidQ
SheerPower 4GL
Speed Basic
Visual Pulsar BASIC

I am not sure whetehr "Blunt Axe basic" fits in the power group.
perhaps "Dark BASIC" also fits in this group with its emphasis on
something hidden and powerful. And what about Envelop Basic - Would
taht fit in as a reference to power?

Then there is an emphasis on fashion and being "in" and the like:

Cool Basic
Hot BASIC
HBasic
HTBasic
KBasic
Kool Basic
XBasic
XBlite BASIC

The scope of the basic is empasized in these names:

Envelop BASIC
Ocean BASIC
Omni BASIC

Then there are names that emphsize trueness, purity and realness:

JustBASIC
PureBASIC
RealBASIC
TrueBASIC

And there are names that emphasize simplicity, smallness and
compactness, and narrowness of focus:

NS Basic ("Nice and Simple Basic")
Media BAsic
Script basic
SmallBASIC
WinBasic
Yabasic (Yet another BAsic)

Some names emphasize newness and rising from the ashes of previous
BAsics:

Emergence Basic
NewBASIC
NUBasic
Phoenix

Surprisingly some emphazise dreams, psychotic states, betrayal, and
the like:

Blunt Axe BASIC
Brutus2D
Dark BASIC
Euphoria
ExtremeBASIC
LithiumBASIC (Lithium is used to treat psychosis)
Ocean BAIC
Phrogram
Speed BASIC (??)
XST! Basic

Quite a few link to the writing of games in the names they choose:

GamBAS
GameBasic
GamesBASIC
PlayBASIC

I also found some names that seem to emphasize ethnic themes:

Dialect
Ethos BASIC
Marathi BASIC
O'basic '97

And of course there is an emphasis on freedom and liberation in the
names chosen:

Emergence BASIC (??)
Envelop BASIC (??)
Ethos BASIC (??)
GNU Liberty BASIC compiler
Liberty BASIC

I wonder what these choices say about the writers and users of BASIC?

Lance
