As I said to Tom, it seems to me that this is an argument for it being
*available*, not for it being the *default*. Indeed, I cannot think
of any argument whatever for it being the default. The fact that you
have 'got used to' it being the default is quite immaterial to a
discussion about its merits, and I'm willing to bet even you make many
more subroutine calls in which you *don't* need the parameters to be
passed by reference than those in which you *do*. We can surely all
agree that when you don't need to pass parameters by reference, it's
better not to. This should not be a controversial subject!
