I remember those days more or less fondly, at least in the mid 80's.
Then somebody got the bright idea of putting a "terminal concentrator"
between the users and the mainframe.  This meant that the system
response time increased from about .15 seconds to about .30 seconds.
Thus my fingers were hitting keys before the system was ready to
accept the inputs.  Drove me nuts.   The PC fixed all that.
