        The market's rejection of APL is a long, sad story which is
about as
        old as APL itself.  Probably the major reasons are:

        1.  Nonstandard character set
        2.  Tendency to write excessively compact programs
        3.  Reputation for inefficiency
        4.  Lack of proper marketing

        I don't think that APL in its current form has a chance.  I
have been
        consulting in APL for over 20 years and see that it's really
over.

        However, J shows a lot a promise, reusing and improving upon
many of the
        good ideas from APL.

        1.  J is not APL.
        2.  Standard characters,
        3.  Very fast execution
        4.  Freely downloadable, source code of old versions available
        5.  A readable style should be taught by example within the
community

        The last point is perhaps the most important.  Too much
brevity is not

        such a good thing.  Everything added to APL

        over the years, like control structures, made code more
readable but a
        little longer.  Even if programs were twice as long as current
APL or J

        programs, they would still be much shorter than traditional
        languages.  But more readable.

I can agree on the comments.

Very often the obsession to write very brief statements may be scaring
people off.

In the scripts it is easy to write structured code and make it easily
readable and clear.
