"People just think the mixed solution is too complicated ..." Agreed,
and I'll put my hand up and plead guilty to thinking likewise in the
not too distant past.

One of my APL applications required that, at runtime, users must be
able to enter expressions that  involve the applications intermediate
variables (results). I implemented this using a text box wherein users
entered expressions ... in APL! Needless to say that this was very
unpopular with users and the feature was used only when absolutely
necesary and when it was, it generated a lot of calls to the help desk
-- right to left evaluation is alien enough and the APL symbols just
made this all but impractical.

Today, the solution is crystal clear: a text box wherein users entered
their expressions using algebraic notation. 1. No one need teach them
how to do so, as they already know this from using tools like Excel or
calculators or just basic arithmetic 2. I do not have to write a
parser -- I just need to use a script control object with error
trapping.
