Mark,
No doubt you already tried <Ctrl>, <Ctrl>+<****ft> + character etc.
Did you try something with 1stcharacter - (<..>+) <Backspace> -
2ndcharacter?
You could also try, just in case of an overstruck, to enter the
ASCII-mnemonic,
e.g. ".GU", and afterwards switch to APL-mode, beit a tedious work around.
I wonder why this procedure wouldn't be in the User Guide.
I've been working 15 years with VAX APL but can't remember having had any
trouble with the overstrikes.
Apart from being a bit slow I loved it, especially some system variables
by
which you could make the header of a variable visible and change the
representation just by changing the third(?) element of that variable
string.
In that way you could change e.g. a character string of 24 in six numbers,
for easy storage in a component file.
I only remember having some trouble with printing APL-characters and after
a
notice to DEC got an escape-string (about one A4!) from them.
