In the year you are quoting -1979 -  there was an IBM APL product by the 
name of A.D.R.S. (A Departmental Reporting System).
I think it was supposed at that time, to offer an alternative to the 
LOTUS 1,2,3 spreadsheet, with the flexibilty to create/insert own 
formulas as functions .... It was using the dispaly Auxiliary Processor 
to navigate inside the spreadsheet.
As far as I remember, a very large number of functions were residing 
into an accessible file by invoking its name in a certain way that 
extracted it and included it inside the WS.
An option was the entire package residing inside the WS.
