Re: Using a Database within Windows + Dyalog APL

"MS Access is like super excel."

This is wrong! I think you are mistaking everything that presents its
data as rows and columns are one and the same thing (including APL
which can use a grid!).

Access is a file based relational database: its rows have no
relationship whatsoever. What you see is a rendering of the data it
holds-the actual data can be stored in any order. Access has data
types.

Excel rows are inter-linked (try deleting a cell on any row and look
at the prompt dialogue that comes up). The rows are stored exactly as
you see them. Excel does not have data types, simply means of
formatting data.

Access can be the front end (GUI) for a SQL Server database (server
based). Look up ADP projects in the Access help files. Excel cannot.

Access can hook to any table in any other relational data source such
as Oracle and allow you to change the data at source. Excel allows a
snapshot of a relational data source-you cannot change the source from
Excel.

You can manipulate Access data using SQL; Excel.Application does not
support SQL although you can embed SQL queries within it.

I hope you get the gist of the differences ...

APL has neither the intrinsic support for database data types nor do
arrays represent relational data: for starters, there is no way to
represent NULL in APL. In databases, NULL is a missing value (any
attempt to query its properties should give you VALUE ERROR in APL ..
it doesn't!) and one NULL value is not equal to another NULL value.
