Just ignore this if it's too far out of line with what you are
wanting, but since you seem to want more control than than those tools
provide and we're in the Ada group ...

Have you considered something like BUSH? It's at:

Not affiliated with Pegasoft or BUSH, but have always liked the idea
of an Ada based shell scripting language for Ada people.
