I may be misunderstanding the situation, but what's wrong with the
user getting the data from the struct himself?
i.e.:
  FILE *fd = fopen(name,mode);
  printf ("file name is %s\n", fd.FileName);

I also agree with Chris in that it would be wasting a lot of memory.
