There's your problem- language!

A "bug" certainly can crash a system.  A "virus" has a very specific
definition- it is deliberate, (unlike a "bug" which is accidental) and it
attempts to replicate itself and infect other systems, like a real virus.

No matter how terrible a software bug is, it's not a virus, because it's
not malicious.
It's easy to why a software developer (or distributor) might be offended
if you referred to a bug as a virus.
